Discrete Groups and Non-riemannian Homogeneous Spaces
A basic question in geometry is to understand compact locally homogeneous manifolds, i.e., those compact manifolds that can be locally modelled on a homogeneous space J\H of a finite-dimensional Lie group H. This means that there is an atlas on a manifold M consisting of local diffeomorphisms with open sets in J\H where the transition functions between these open sets are given by translations ...
متن کاملNon-isomorphic C∗-algebras with Isomorphic Unitary Groups
Dye, [Ann. of Math. (2) 61 (1955), 73–89] proved that the discrete unitary group in a factor determines the algebraic type of the factor. Afterwards, for a large class of simple unital C∗-algebras, Al-Rawashdeh, Booth and Giordano [J. Funct. Anal. 262 (2012), 4711–4730] proved that the algebras are ∗-isomorphic if and only if their unitary groups are isomorphic as abstract groups. In this paper...
متن کاملOn Isomorphic Groups and Homeomorphic Spaces
Let C(X, G) denote the group of continuous functions from a topological space X into a topological group G with the pointwise multiplication. Some classes of SQ-pairs and properties of the corresponding topological group C(X, G) with the compact-open topology are investigated. We also show that the existence of a group isomorphism between groups C(X, G) and C( Y, G) implies the existence of a h...
متن کاملUncountably Many Arcs in S Whose Complements Have Non-isomorphic, Indecomposable Fundamental Groups
An uncountable collection of arcs in S is constructed, each member of which is wild precisely at its endpoints, such that the fundamental groups of their complements are non-trivial, pairwise non-isomorphic, and indecomposable with respect to free products. The fundamental group of the complement of a certain Fox-Artin arc is also shown to be indecomposable.
متن کاملOn the distance between non-isomorphic groups
A result of Ben-Or, Coppersmith, Luby and Rubinfeld on testing whether a map between two groups is close to a homomorphism implies a tight lower bound on the distance between the multiplication tables of two non-isomorphic groups. In [2] Drápal showed that if ◦ and ∗ are two binary operations on the finite set G such that (G,◦) and (G,∗) are non-isomorphic groups then the Hamming distance betwe...
